Here’s How to Support Local Communities this MLK Day

Every year, millions around the country come together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a day a service to the community in honor of the life and work of one of the country’s foremost civil rights icons. In 2021, given the ongoing pandemic, the community service projects held on MLK Day will certainly look and feel a bit different—but that doesn’t mean they’re any less important. There are still many worthwhile projects right near your Royal Athena apartment—and some that you can do right from home!—so you can safely give back to those in need.

One such event is the Victoria Urban Outreach Tutoring Service’s Day of Service Community Give-Back. From 9 a.m.-noon Jan. 18, VUOTS will host an outreach event at the Our House Culture Center, just 10 minutes from your Royal Athena apartment. Volunteers are needed to help pack and distribute more than 100 MLK Day activity sets, which will include paint kits, school supplies, kids’ activities and educational resources about Dr. King, the fight for civil rights and the ongoing work of VUOTS. This year, there will also be a special focus on COVID-19 and what Philadelphians can do to protect themselves and the pandemic against the disease.

VUOTS provides a range of services for both youth and adults, including tutoring, summer enrichment programming, adult education and the distribution of school supplies to families in need. Beyond MLK Day, VUOTS relies on volunteers throughout the year for tutoring, mentoring and much more—so if you make a connection on the Day of Service, you can build a meaningful and lasting volunteer relationship.

This Martin Luther King Day, take the opportunity to check out this or other local volunteer events—every act, no matter how small, can give back to the community in a big way!
